Living in Washington

Discover the villages, communities and local areas that make Washington a great place to call home.

A town made up of
welcoming villages

Washington is a thriving town in Tyne and Wear, ideally positioned between Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham. With excellent road links to the A1(M), A19 and surrounding areas, it offers a convenient location for commuters while retaining a strong sense of community.

What makes Washington particularly unique is its village feel. Originally designated as a New Town in 1964, Washington was developed around a collection of smaller, self-contained villages, each designed to provide homes, schools, shops, employment and local amenities within their own communities.

The town was originally divided into 15 numbered districts, which could often be confusing for residents and visitors alike. Over time, these numbered districts were gradually replaced by the village names we know today, giving each part of Washington its own identity and character.

Today, Washington is home to a diverse collection of communities, from established residential areas to newer developments, each offering something different for those looking to make their home in the area.
