A village with history
Penshaw has strong connections to the industrial and mining heritage of the wider North East, but its history stretches much further back. Penshaw Hill itself is believed to have had defensive uses in the past, with evidence suggesting activity on the hill dating back to the Iron Age. The area has therefore played a role in the landscape for many centuries.
The monument was built following a public fundraising campaign to commemorate John George Lambton, the 1st Earl of Durham. Around £6,000 was raised through public subscription, and approximately 30,000 people attended the laying of the foundation stone in August 1844.
Today, the monument remains in the care of the National Trust and continues to be one of the defining landmarks of Wearside.
