Washington is a town situated between Sunderland, Newcastle and Durham and is ideally placed between the A1 and A19 motorways. It is a new town in Tyne and Wear and was developed through the New-Towns concept which was designed to create sustainable small villages to nurture a friendly ‘small village’ feel. The new town is split into smaller villages. Washingon originaly had 15 numbered districts which caused a great deal of confusion especially by visitors to the area, The local council decided to gradually phase out the numbered districts in favor of the village names.
Washington has lots to offer, from an employment perspective it has many industrial estates creating a large number of jobs including the department of work and pensions and Nissan (which is one of the largest employers in the North of England) as well as it being nestled on the banks of the river Wear and along the Coast to Coast path so lots of trails and walks for anyone who likes the outdoor life. It also has a town center with a large retail presence in the shape of the Washington Galleries and retail park with many well know high street brands.
